Great call by the OP to be sure. I would be really interested in what architecture those DBA's would recommend.
I'm with Jim and Dave, even a month down would be so worth it...

Judging by some of the responses in this thread and the restraint of the OP amid the flames along with the typical lack of dev response, the bulls-eye was probably hit dead center on this one. I know they haven't responded but I'm betting this thread has started some serious brainstorming around the shop at CCP. All any of us wants is for this game to be able to function at the level it deserves.
good thread.

Originally by: Iratus Caelestis Eve has been MSSQL from day one. Just remember that eve is the equivelent of 5 very smart guys sitting in a pub, deciding they wanted to grief people in space and then just ran with the idea.
It is an incredible success story, but maybe it would be a good time for them to sell EVE to a company that has adequate resources and a staff of people that have the knowledge to manage it properly. While they're at it maybe they could move the cluster to where the player base is, like the East coast of the U.S.A. or Canada.

I'm not an expert on this subject in any way but a very interested player that wants to see this game be all it can be. Having said that, does the information Oveur posted jive with what CCP devs said in This Interview posted yesterday 1/12/07?
FFB: EVE Online is one of the few games that have one giant server which harbors every player. What has been your biggest server problem technically seen?
CCP: ... Our biggest technical problem has been related to clustering of players and our systems broadcasting too much data between players. Usually these bottlenecks don't become apparent until many months (or years) after the system is deployed simply because at the time of deployment the number of players (or people using the system) was an order of magnitude smaller. However, sometimes we notice scalability issues right away when we deploy a change and therefore have to patch the server as quickly as possible in order to provide our subscribers with an acceptable level of service.
I have no idea really but it kinda sounds like the dev in the interview is talking about a DB bottleneck...

It sounds kinda like they need to reduce the number of npc to reduce the flow of information through the database, that would be because the database is choking in the first place, correct?
If they need to reduce the number of "dumb" npc entities to lower the information being broadcast, why not remove all concord ships from the game altogether and let the individual navy and customs officials deal with the lawless?
There are always many choices
